Thank you to all of the parents who were able to attend our first Coffee Morning in the Learning Hub! We had a great turnout with a fantastic discussion!

For those of you that were not able to attend, or those who would like to review some of the topics we discussed, we will always post a “recap” of the session here on the Connect 2.0 blog. Please feel free to add your comments and questions so we can keep the sessions relevant to you.

The goal of these sessions is to continue to strengthen the home-school connection, to help educate parents about the exciting changes that technology brings to our world, and to provide an open forum for dialog about how to learn with these new tools.

We started our session today by discussing some of the exciting ideas that came up at the Learning 2.0 Conference in Shanghai this past weekend. One of the major concepts that was addressed was the idea of blended learning. Blended learning ensures that technology does not take over the classroom, but is instead seen as a tool to be used when necessary and appropriate. At ISB we use technology to enhance our teaching and learning, to go deeper with our thinking, and to collaborate and share what we’ve learned. Our focus is always on teaching and learning, not on the technology.

We sparked some excellent discussion with this version of the Did You Know? video originally posted by Karl Fish in August 2006:

We talked about how much professional development our staff participates in every week. Both Justin and Kim offer sessions almost every day after school to share new and exciting ways to utilize technology as a tool for learning. This week’s sessions are:

Thanks to Kim and Justin for leading this morning’s tech session. It was a great turnout and I think all of us left with a deeper undertsanding and connection to what’s happening at ISB. I also hope that you got a better feeling of just how much is out there that we need to understand in order to support our digital kids in their thinking. Knowledge is power!

As Kim said- we want these parent tech sessions to become a mainstay of our efforts to connect with parents. The next one is scheduled for October 17th. I would also like to extend an invitation to all of you (and your friends) to next week’s first PTA meeting of the year (Sept. 27th) at 9:30 in the ESMPR. Technology will again be the main topic as we strive to offer parents the opportunity to better understand why their kids are on the computer so often.

Finally- your homework. Start a blog or answer this blog before next Thursday. I know many of you who were there this morning and will be asking you in the hallways. I started mty own blog after being so inspired this past weekend. It’s Check it out!

Thanks as always for supporting our school and our efforts to work with your children. We are very excited and fortunate to have a fantastic parent group to connect with.

Partnering with parents to ensure that our students are 21st century thinkers, participants and contributers makes so much sense…thanks to all of you who joined us today for this workshop. There will be many more and we hope you do a little extra homework (after you have started your blog!) and encourage one or two other parents to attend our next sessions (PTA meeting next Thursday as well as October 17).

Our tech geeks (as we referred to them at last weekend’s conference) have made all this fabulous and exciting learning available to our students, faculty, staff and parents. We applaud their passion and dedication to our school community. They make shift happen (check out the video!)

We encourage you to ask big, bold questions, and to continue the “connect2 dialogue”. Keep in mind that our doors are always open.
